Abstract
There is virtually no research in Australia on how micro, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) address environmental and social issues" in particular considering that the Australian SME sector account for almost 99% of all private sector entities. This paper presents the preliminary findings of a qualitative study which addressed this gap through an investigation of perceptions of owner and managers of SMEs based in the Western Sydney Region, in relation to environmental and social issues. The findings reveal that, while participants were aware of and had a genuine concern for environmental and social issues affecting SMEs, they were often unable to engage in environmental and social responsibility practices due to factors such as cost, time pressures and lack of government support.
