    Abstract

Much attention is given to the cognitive bases of learning in nursing education curricula including learning facts, conceptual understanding, thinking and reasoning. However perceptual learning, which is intrinsic to nursing expertise, has in the most part received less attention. As clinical expertise in nursing results in improved care and better outcomes perceptual learning can be considered to have a greater contribution to make to nursing education. This paper addresses perceptual learning, its relation to expertise, role in the development of performance and application in nursing education.
