Performance of CFRP-strengthened concrete filled steel tubes under axial compression

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperConference Paperpeer-review

Abstract

This paper presents an experimental study of concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) stub columns strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites subjected to axial compression. Twenty specimens were tested to investigate the effects of steel tube shape, number of CFRP layers and steel wall thickness on the performance of the composite columns. The test results indicated that the CFRP jackets enhanced the load-bearing capacity for the circular columns effectively, whereas the enhancement was less significant for square columns. A simple model is proposed in this paper to calculate the ultimate strength of square CFST stub columns wrapped with CFRP. The predicted results are generally in good agreement with the experimental results.
