    Abstract

This survey of Indian naming customs demonstrates the complexity of the system and identifies the relationships between the social and cultural structures on one hand, and naming customs on the other. The discussion has shown that Indian naming customs are closely related to Hinduism, varna, caste ( jati), clan ( gotra), and lineage; that naming customs are not static, but respond to changes in the social, cultural, and political life of the nation; and that both national and international migration have modified Indian naming customs.
