Perspectives on risk

Richard Bawden

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperChapter

Abstract

Differential acceptability of risk within communities is a key variability in the search for public consensus about technological developments. This is particularly so in the case of major infrastructures where debates about risks associated with their introduction, often seem to confound progress towards consensus, rather than clarify. In this paper the author explores the topic of risks from a number of different perspectives while arguing that technologists need to expand their conventional views on the whole matter and exploring the concept of 'knowability'.
