    Abstract

This chapter, with a focus on nature-based destinations such as protected areas and natural heritage sites, presents the initiatives of the Philippines in promoting sustainable tourism. It also explores issues and challenges in the development and implementation of these initiatives. In this chapter, the term 'sustainable tourism' is used interchangeably with the term 'ecotourism'. The study included is based on the review of relevant academic literature, government policies, and national reports. Face-to-face interviews with key tourism and natural resources management officials and field visits in the Philippines were conducted for several months from 2008-2010. The results of this will serve as a basis on how the Philippines, as well as other developing countries in a similar situation, will move forward in pursuing the notion of sustainability in tourism.
