Abstract
![CDATA[The philosophy of religion is that area of philosophical inquiry which concerns itself with questions of a religious nature, typically, as these involve religious beliefs. By name at least, the term philosophy of religion goes back to Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s Vorlesungen über die Philosophie der Religion [Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion, 1821–1831], although many of the questions raised in philosophy of religion go back to the ancient Greeks, particularly in the writings of Plato (429–347 BCE), Aristotle (384–322 BCE), and Plotinus (204–270 CE). Although most of what passes under the name philosophy of religion concentrates its attention on the classical theisms of the West— Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—a growing body of literature is expanding the horizon, turning its attention to religions outside this narrow focus.]]
