Abstract

The results found in the laboratory may not fully reflect what happens in practice. Pilot-scale outdoor production studies are an important part of the puzzle to identify and resolve challenges that may only arise when production is scaled up and placed under a variety of climatic conditions. Therefore, in this chapter, the main objective was to evaluate a case involving microalgae cultivation outdoors on a pilot scale. The case study data was analyzed to extract insights contributing to a broader understanding of outdoor microalgae cultivation. Hot spots for outdoor microalgae cultivation are identified and conclusions are drawn about the potential of these systems for biomass productivity. This case study presents a holistic approach to exploring microalgae cultivation in real-world situations.
