    Abstract

The genus Pisolithus has a worldwide distribution. Most isolates of the fungus, regardless of their origin, have been treated as conspecific, being described as Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker and Couch [Syn. = P. arhizus (Scop.: Pers.) Rauschert]. Recent comparison of DNA sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal RNA gene cluster suggests that several distinct biological species exist within the group currently identified as P. tinctorius. Such work provides an excellent example of the usefulness of molecular approaches in systematic studies of morphologically heterogeneous taxa such as Pisolithus.
