    Abstract

This paper explores planners' potential contribution to re· establishing a sustainable people/planet relationship. The Royal Australian Planning Institute has adopted the principles of sustainable development as key elements of planning practice. Three sets of questions underlie planners' capacity to respond to that challenge. How serious is the present degradation of the planet's natural systems? If it is as serious as suggested, is planning contributing to its unfortunate state? And if h is contributing, what can planners do about it for the future?
