Abstract

Young people’s media worlds and practices have been transformed by three critical developments. The first development involves the proliferation of platforms that are now available to young people to communicate, play, and create with digital media. The second development involves the enhanced possibilities for engaging in what has been termed participatory culture. The final development is the importance of place in shaping who, where, how, and why young people use digital media. Platforms, participation, and place present both challenges and opportunities for understanding and researching the role of media in the everyday lives of young people.
