Abstract
The work of Karl Polanyi and his followers has attracted substantial attention in a wide range of disciplines and is now highly cited in the social sciences. It offers an alternative conceptual lens that is particularly useful in the protracted period of neoliberalism. This chapter aims to show the evolution, influence, and status of Polanyian ideas. Key points of interest and scholarly debate emanating from Polanyi's oeuvre, including The Great Transformation (1944), are considered, as is Polanyi's distinctive institutionalism in relation to economic orthodoxy.
