N2 - During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, as industrialisation started to take place across Britain, there were riots by working people as they saw their livelihoods replaced by machines and, in some places, the costs of daily living rising beyond their reach. There were riots against the increasing price of bread and other staples, and against the new machinery and technology that was revolutionising their lives. Many of these workers were criminalised by the legal system, some were executed, and others transported. The place of Australian female convicts in this politicisation of work has not been investigated.
