Abstract
Personal responsibility occurs when the actor becomes aware that he or she is responsible for how s/he relates to the world and, thus, for how she contributes to making that world what it is. In what follows, I discuss the question of personal responsibility from the standpoint of two individualsJean Amery and Hannah Arendt-who were positioned as Jews in the relationship between the Nazi Regime and its victims. While each of these individuals knew they were Jewish prior to the rise of the Nazis, it was the Nazi experience that gave to their awareness of being Jewish an entirely new resonance.
