Politics and the performance of space in Istanbul

Abstract

In the 2019 local elections in Turkey, the main opposition party CHP (Republican People’s Party) won the elections in Istanbul—twice. The first election, held in March, was annulled upon the objection of President Erdoğan and his party, the AKP (Justice and Development Party). Yet, after the second vote in June, CHP’s Ekrem İmamoğlu was again elected as mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality by a landslide. Central government-municipal relations in Turkey have always been controversial, and the divergence between Istanbul and national voting patterns has precedence. Despite municipalities in Turkey having a degree of autonomy, the central government maintains its control over local governments through financial resource allocations and controlling decision-making processes (Savaşkan 2020).
