    Abstract

The word 'community' has a range of connotations. It can refer to those who share a geographical location, who belong to a school or a neighbourhood or who share common knowledge, understandings and values. this chapter shows how active respect among communities that differ but live in the same locality, can break down barriers and construct more positive community relationships. This chapter provides an example of how this might be put into practice and the factors and processes that can contribute to positive outcomes.
