Abstract
Nationalist philosophies and nationalist movements in the post World War II period have been highly influential factors in shaping the turbulent arena of postwar domestic and international politics. In the immediate postwar decades, anticolonial nationalism played a prominent role in shaping state formation across the globe, from the Caribbean to Africa – especially sub-Saharan Africa but also the north – and from the Middle East to the expanses of Asia and the Pacific Islands. Naturally, anticolonial nationalist movements could not help but impact the domestic and international political relations of the former colonial powers, both old and new, from the long-standing colonial powers like Great Britain, France, Belgium, Portugal, and the Netherlands to the latecomers such as the United States of America and Australia.
