Abstract
The chapter intervenes in international debates about the idea of communism that have developed in the wake of the 2011 Occupy movements. The authors develop an argument that places the concept and practice of power at the centre of these debates. In particular, they interrogate how contemporary conceptions of communism depart from the actually existing communisms of the twentieth century, which centred power in the institution of the state. In doing so, they grapple with problems of internationalism, the variegation of capitalism in contemporary global context, and debates about property ownership and the commons. To close, they revisit early communist theories of dual power and suggest they provide a basis for negotiating the relation of collective movements of the common to state power in the present.
