Abstract
Patients with secondary mitral regurgitation (SMR) constitutes a significant proportion of patients with chronic MR and can manifest considerable clinical heterogeneity due to the number of conditions associated with it. SMR, also frequently known as “functional” MR, occurs in patients with both ischemic and idiopathic non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, and is essentially MR without any abnormality of the mitral valve leafl ets. As the most common cause of SMR by far is ischemic coronary artery disease, SMR is frequently also termed ischemic MR.
