Abstract
Ayurveda, the ancient traditional medical system of the Indian subcontinent, has much to offer to contemporary health conditions, including neurocognitive disorders. As these conditions are rapidly accelerating with demographic and lifestyle changes, the need to look at other systems of health care for potential treatments is becoming more significant.
Ayurveda has an underlying philosophy about the world and the individual, and how to operate within it to maximize longevity and health. The basic principles of this philosophy are outlined, covering the main theories and precepts of Ayurveda. Maintaining cognitive health from an Ayurvedic perspective is then described, including diet and digestion (ahara), lifestyle routine (vihara), physical therapies (pancha karma), and tonics (rasayana). Together, these aspects can work synergistically to prevent cognitive decline and offer a natural and effective way to maximize neurocognitive health.
