Abstract
I have been reading and learning from Fred Block’s work for just about as long as I can remember. Starting when I was a graduate student, his trenchant critiques of Reagan-era social policy occupied one corner of my desk (Block et al., 1987), his incisive contributions to state theory another (Block, 1987), and never far from the middle sat his influential interpretations of Polanyian socioeconomics (Block and Somers, 1984). Fred Block has long been engaged in the vital work of critiquing and (re)constructing some of the fundamental concepts and categories of social science, particularly those pertaining to (the analysis of) capitalism, the state, finance, and markets. His is a model of creative, heterodox scholarship.
