Abstract
This chapter looks at Daisetsu Teitaro Suzuki's earliest writings, situating them in the broader context of Buddhist revival in Meiji Japan, and his continuation of its mission to introduce MahÄyÄna Buddhism in the West. It reassesses the motivations for and consequences of Suzuki's 11-year apprenticeship at La Salle, Illinois with German-born American philosopher and publisher Dr Paul Carus within this perspective. It is therefore necessary to start with a brief account of the earlier formation of Eastern Buddhism as presented at Chicago, before moving on to its impact on Carus which created the opportunity and incentive for Suzuki's journey to the West, and finally to Suzuki's work at La Salle that brought Eastern Buddhism to successful publication.
