Quality of life among Egyptian migrants living in Australia

The aim of this study was to identify the predictors of QoL of migrant Egyptians living in Australia. Participants’ perception of their QoL was assessed using the modified Flanagan Quality of Life Scale (QoLS). Cross-cultural adaptation was undertaken of the English version of the QoLS. The QoLS was self-administered to 200 Egyptian migrants. Cronbach's alpha coefficient (to test reliability) was 0.96 for the total of QoLS and 0.84, 0.78 and 0.66 for the ‘Relationships and Material Wellbeing’ ‘Personal, Social and Community Commitment’ and ‘Health and Functioning’ subscales respectively. The mean QoL score was 81.6 (SD± 15.6). Of the five socio-demographic factors investigated employment status was the factor most strongly associated with high QoL (P=0.005). This study is the first to demonstrate the impact of employment status on the QoL of Egyptian migrants in Australia. Culturally sensitive interventions directed towards addressing this issue need to be implemented.
