    Abstract

Studies on field assessment of ectomycorrhizal fungi have been based mainly in the identification and quantification of sporocarps and, in a lesser extent, of mycorrhizas. Although extramatrical mycelium is the physiologically active phase of the mycorrhizal symbiosis, very few attempts have been made to evaluate its distribution in the soil.
