Abstract

As we have pointed out in the introductory chapter, this book is a research-based project exploring gender in early childhood and early childhood education, as well as examining what feminist theory, in its various iterations, has contributed to understandings in this area. The discussions across the chapters bring multiple academic voices and theoretical perspectives (e. g. feminist post-structuralism, feminist post-humanism, eco-feminism, queer theory and Marxist feminism). The chapters are also based on different research projects conducted with children, with early childhood educators and with gender theorists across different ‘spacetimematterings’, geolocations and political contexts. The research projects are based on a range of different methodologies – some may be considered post-qualitative (St. Pierre, 2017; St. Pierre & Jackson, 2014), while others have involved more traditional qualitative approaches.
