Readmission rates following repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for post-traumatic stress disorder with comorbid major depressive disorder

Abstract

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) involves non-invasive brain stimulation generated by passing electrical current through a magnetic coil, which produces a time-limited magnetic field. rTMS may treat mental health conditions such as major depressive disorder (MDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (MDD). Approximately half of people with PTSD may experience MDD and these comorbidities may be more difficult to treat. We aimed to assess factors associated with readmissions following rTMS administered to inpatients with comorbid MDD and PTSD at Ward 17 through Psychological Trauma and Recovery Services (PTRS), a statewide multidisciplinary service in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia which offers treatment to military personnel, first responders, and others with compensable trauma-related mental health conditions.
