Abstract

The construction industry’s use of huge amounts of energy and emissions of greenhouse gases is one of the dangers that lead to global warming and climate change that the world is experiencing today. This has led to the production of innovative, sustainable, and energy-efficient answers. Solutions have begun to be sought since the beginning of the 21st century to limit the use of waste, especially in the construction and building sectors. Developments in technology have increased the variety of materials in the construction and building sectors, and the production of environmentally friendly materials has become a priority. In the production of building materials, the concepts of sustainable, environmentally friendly, and smart materials have entered the construction and building sector and have provided diversity in this field. These three concepts are not completely different from each other. Although they have distinct features, they also have common features. Each material has brought great innovations to the traditional and wanted construction industry, and they have gradually developed and created a leap forward in the industry. Herein, in this scope, the chapter for the Digital Transformation in Construction Industry: Sustainability, Resilience, and Data-Centric Engineering book covers the latest emerging trends and technologies of smart, sustainable, and environmentally-friendly materials in the construction and building sectors.
