Abstract
This chapter looks at why values education is important and uses the example of nationwide research from Australia to show how governments see its importance. While most educational systems promote values education, many teachers are unsure about how best to incorporate values into their normal, everyday teaching practices, so the link is made to EHV. The chapter goes on to look at models of and the science behind the human mind in order to understand how values influence learning and behaviours. Supported by Australian values-education research, the chapter then looks at important components of values education, including neuroscience and learning, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), and positive educational practices and their links to the Education in Human Values (EHV). The chapter concludes with a section on service learning and how important this is for putting theory into practice in values education.
