    Abstract

![CDATA[Examines two books published just prior to Kenneth Rivett's death – After Defensive War and Purpose and Choice in a Donor Nation. These volumes present his life statement. The views he expresses are clearly swimming against the tide of conventional thinking about the modern world and globalization. To advocate pacifism, practise frugal consumption and devoting oneself to improving the lot of the destitute and downtrodden, is not a popular stance these days. Reading these volumes draws one back to an earlier age of scholarship, when economics was a branch of moral philosophy. Rivett is deeply immersed in the historical, ethical and philosophical dimensions of the public policy debates he enters.]]
