Reinventing the media sphere : Fiji Indian voices down under

    Abstract

Globalisation and the dot.com ear with information saturation have taken a strong hold on the way the world communicates. While access to news an information is almost instantaneous as stories break and events happen, the global scale shift in media consumption and engagement is giving rise to an interesting community of media practitioners who operate a thriving business, capitalising on the growth markets in small communities that have little recognition because of their small scale existence, by the mainstream presses. These media are vibrant in the form of business directories, magazines, newspapers, radio, websites, to name a few, through which people of a common culture and heritage locate one another, while providing them with a powerful voice. This chapter explores the media playing field for Fiji Indians. The community's desire to cross borders, as a solution to Fiji's ongoing political strife, has led to an interesting marriage between the 21st century media and migration.
