Abstract

![CDATA[AS 4324.1:2017 is an Australian standard for materials handling machines such as ship loaders, stackers and reclaimers, which is for export of bulk materials from Australian ports. In this standard, load factors for LSD have been revised to improve the cost-safety balance of the standard. This study estimates the reliability of steel columns based on AS 4324.1:2017 using these load factors adopting the load distributions updated based on collected on-site load data through strain gauging and SCADA system. Steel columns subjected to concentrated axial compression and bi-axial bending are considered in the analyses. This study employs the Monte Carlo simulations to consider the uncertainties in design parameters, loads, and resistance and load prediction models. As representative examples, five load combinations (I, II/1, III/6, III/8, and III/10) for two design scenarios are considered for an 1850t reclaimer and a 400t stacker. It is found from the analyses that the overall reliability indices have been increased when the load distributions based on on-site load measurement data are used compared to the case that qualitatively determined load distributions are used, and they showed consistent safety levels over the load combinations and load scenarios.]]
