Abstract

We thank Dr. Wei and his esteemed colleagues for their letter highlighting an important issue regarding the terminology of prostate cancer (PCa) with neuroendocrine (NE) features in response to our article in European Urology. We can all agree that pathologists can readily identify small-cell prostate cancer. The utilization of immunohistochemistry for NE markers (eg, synaptophysin and chromogranin) in prostate samples obtained from men with untreated, clinically localized PCa has led to confusion on how to classify such samples when positive expression is encountered in the absence of bona fide small cell features.
