Abstract

In this special issue of Contact Lens and Anterior Eye on the theme of “Long-term Effects of Contact Lens Wear”, the two surviving members of the original five authors of the celebrated “Gothenburg Study” [1] – NE and DS, the authors of the present paper – feel that it is apposite to reprise this work, which was published 37 years ago. The Gothenburg Study, formally titled “Effects of long-term extended contact lens wear on the human cornea”, is the tenth most cited publication of all time (331 cites), out of a total of 12,861 papers with “contact lens” in the title (Scopus [Elsevier]; search conducted June 10, 2021). The findings of this work were, and still are, novel and remarkable, and the conclusions and recommendations essentially established a blueprint for the development of contact lenses over the subsequent three decades.
