Resolution of respect for Ekkehard von Torne (1925-2017)

Abstract

Dr. Ekkehard von Törne was born on 28 October 1925 in Grieben, Germany. He studied Biology and Philosophy at the University of Innsbruck in Austria, where he also received his Ph.D. in 1953. In his dissertation, Dr. Ekkehard von Törne studied life history traits and functional groups of Collembola (Von Törne, 1953). In 1955, he moved to Jena, German Democratic Republic, to work for the Akademie der Landwirtschaftswissenschaften der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik (Academy for Agricultural Sciences of the GDR). In 1961, he founded the journal Pedobologia" Journal for Soil Biology (today: Pedobiologia" Journal of Soil Ecology; Powell et al., 2014) and edited the journal with greatest dedication until 1991. This seminal work paved the way for Pedobiologia to become a traditional, internationally well-respected, and widely read journal in the field of soil science.
