Abstract

The electronic medical record (EMR) is regarded not only as an electronic repository of patient data but also as a tool for critical thinking in today's digital age. It allows for the conversion of raw data into meaningful information, which guides decision-making among healthcare practitioners. Appropriate use of the EMR enhances multidisciplinary communication within the healthcare team, supports timely care and patient safety, and helps prevent information technology-related patient harm. These benefits highlight the importance of training staff in the proper use of the EMR, particularly nurses and midwives who comprise 57% of Australia's healthcare workforce.
