    Abstract

![CDATA[The Visual Patterns Test (VPT) is a measure of short-term, nonverbal memory. It has been designed specifically to target examinees' recall of visual images per se, separate from any need to recall any spatial elements such as their position. The rationale given for making this distinction is based on evidence of separate locations in the brain for neural activity associated with the functions of visual and spatial memory. In this context, the target populations for use of the VPT are those with brain damage due to degenerative disease or injury, and for whom differentiation between specific memory functions that may be impaired has particular clinical and research value.]]
