Abstract
![CDATA[Given the emergence of the nuanced, post-1997 literature on the inequality-development nexus, the chapter revisits the experiences of four Southeast Asian economies -Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. The review of the evidence and the explanations of the evidence suggest that these Southeast Asian economies cannot really be regarded as exemplars of 'shared growth'. Land and other forms of wealth inequality are very high, and barriers to education persist. These sources of inequality can in turn unleash political economy forces that perpetuate the initial level of inequality. These countries do have a much higher income Gini than Korea or Taiwan.]]
