Abstract
The Risk Society thesis encapsulates a number of dilemmas, including the future of employment practices in a world where scarcity and perturbations (social, economic, political and environment) are normal. Robinson and Smallman evaluate the risks posed to employees by workplace opportunities and threats in the late-modern economy. Workplace risk has important consequences for the management of enterprise, especially in regard to three significant themes: the nature of jobs; the form of employment arrangements; and the growth of high-performance workplaces organised around flexible production.
