    Abstract

Published in: Rituals & Traditions by Kim Tao. Rituals may vary in form, content and social function, but they are found in every society. They are cultural universals. In the Rituals & Traditions exhibition series, Fairfield City Museum & Gallery has chosen four community rituals which show that although communities may think of themselves as unique, this has to do with outward presentation only. In fact, as human beings, we all need rituals in our lives. Rituals mark time and give a sense of order to a society. For instance, we use rituals to divide time into days, weeks, months and years. This helps us organise society.
