Abstract

Can robotics play a moral role in the life of humans? This question has been systematically addressed by the main approaches to machine ethics, which are prevalently inspired by normative theories in the consequentialist and deontological traditions. These theories focus on the maximization of practical and psychological advantages for the users and the obligation to protect human dignity, respectively. In many circumstances, for example when designing autonomous vehicles, the careful implementation of these theories is indispensable to assure that the systems’ behaviour aligns with the ethical intuitions that are shared by most people and enshrined in our systems of laws, such as the fundamental principles pertaining to common good or individual rights.
