Abstract
The Australian Legend was a search for a national identity as it explored language and 'Austrailian-ness'. It expressed the anxieties about post-war non-Anglo immigration and the tensions about race and cultural difference. For middle class Australia, it invented a cultural stability, durability and order in an Australian national identity.
