    Abstract

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence is a scientific experiment which has been pursued for the last forty-five years. Over one hundred searches (ranging from one-off to sporadic and continuous) in both the microwave and optical regions of the electromagnetic spectrum have been carried out during this time. To date no ETI signals with the required signature have been discovered. This paper discusses some of the most significant searches and future directions in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
