    Abstract

Teachers have a vital role to play in the struggle for social justice by empowering students to both understand and address Aboriginal issues. It is hoped that this chapter will inspire and empower you to get started toward achieving such an aim. Firstly, to help you develop your own professional rationale for Aboriginal Studies, we will discuss what Aboriginal Studies is and examine some rationales for teaching Aboriginal Studies. Secondly, we will also consider why Aboriginal community partnerships are critical at all phases of the teaching process: development, implementation and evaluation. Finally, some strategies for developing effective teaching units will be outlined. The key purpose of this chapter is to empower you to consider becoming that one person who can stand up to be counted to make a real difference in educating a nation and addressing social justice for Aboriginal Australians.
