Abstract
![CDATA[Self-esteem is a critical component of success in any high performance environment. A high level of self esteem is not only a consequence of success at an elite level, it also plays an important role as a buffer against negative events which may occur as a result of elite participation. Given the importance of self-esteem, it is beneficial to have a greater understanding of the motivational and protective function that self esteem may have during a transitional, life-changing event associated with elite sport. The participants for this study were 39 ex-residential athletes from the Australian Institute of Sport, and 12 family members. The results indicated that athletes with low self-esteem were at a greater risk of experiencing adjustment difficulties during a transition away from the residential environment. Inappropriate transition debriefing or preparation, when associated with low self-esteem, was found to have a marked impact on thought processes and confidence in the post-institutional situation. Athletes with high levels of self-esteem also experienced decrements in self-belief if circumstances surrounding the onset of the transition were perceived to be detrimental to immediate sporting career prospects. It was concluded that transition debriefing procedures must incorporate strategies that maintain or enhance levels of athlete self esteem to assist with the adaptation process.]]
