Abstract
In this chapter I explore the relationship between two ideas: first the idea of self-preservation considered as a right of the human subject to assume existence as a centre of subjective experience, to enjoy freedom to be and become a self; and second the idea of the sovereign state as the only possible basis of peaceful coexistence between subjects considered as selves.
