Abstract
Among the few personal possessions of the former President Sukarno recovered by his son after he died in Jakarta on 21 June 1970 was a bottle of his cologne, Shalimar de Guerlain. A broken man, Sukarno had been under house arrest since formally relinquishing power in February 1967 to the military, led by General Soeharto, which had orchestrated his demise in 1965. 'Demise' - the word seems almost a euphemism for what had occurred in late 1965 and the first half of 1966: the countrywide purge of communists, real and alleged, and their associates that saw the violent death of at least half a million people. Around one hundred thousand people were killed on Bali alone.
