Abstract

![CDATA[Ali Shariati (1933–1977) is a key figure of Islamic and Iranian intellectual history, but he is especially important for sociology of religion owing to his direct utilisation of Qur’anic doctrine for social change. He returned to Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s Tehran in 1964 after completing his studies at the Sorbonne in Paris, impassioned with a demand for social revolution. Shariati’s project was to foreground Islam as a religious and political force for justice. His works can be summarised in the context of the demand for justice incumbent upon the citizen.]]
