    Abstract

The sign is the fundamental concept for Semiotics (or Semiology), a mode of enquiry extending across a number of disciplines that seeks to explain how phenomena: words, spoken and written; visual images; gestures; material things, natural and human-made, come to take on meaning within communicative contexts.
