Abstract
![CDATA[This paper focuses on one song, O Zimbabwe!, written and recorded on the other side of the world by non-Zimbabweans who have no international profile, to raise awareness of what was and is going on in Zimbabwe. The notion of songs as a means of urging social change and educating other parts of the world to focus on a particular situation is examined. O Zimbabwe! is discussed through an historical and contextual frame built from an understanding of this role of song throughout history, and the role of song in Africa and in Zimbabwe itself. Issues of cultural and social capital, of singing, and of music (especially popular music) as an agent in the communication of social change, particularly in Africa, are raised and surround the discourse of O Zimbabwe!]]
