Abstract
Living reference work entry: The potential contribution of volunteering to achieving [United Nations] Sustainable Development Goal 1: No Poverty is explored in this entry, which has two main goals: (1) to unpack some of the problematic assumptions of volunteering and (2) to discuss volunteering in terms of its articulation with the SDGs. Overall the entry highlights how volunteering over recent decades has taken on myriad forms and trajectories which make its traditional association with civil society problematic.
